Math

This year we used the connected math units for math. This unit is new to me and this is the first year I’ve used this program. Connected math is an investigated approach to learning math. There are eight units in connected math. We have done six out of eight. We have done Prime Time, Bits and Pieces 1 and 2, Shapes and Designs, Covering and surrounding, and How Likely is it.
Connected Math works differently than any other math program I’ve used. It shows example problems at the beginning of the book to let us know what the problems are like and to make us want to do some of the problems in the book or get us curious about the unit.

If there’s something I don’t understand I can just go to the website and click on video tutors. The video tutors explain how to do the problems and how to figure it out. They also have quizzes on the website so if we click on that we can take a quiz on what we’ve been learning about. At the end of an investigation they put some problems in an area known as ACE. The A in ACE stands for assessment, the C stands for Composition, and the E stands for Extensions. The ACE work is mainly our homework.
We divide our binders into five different areas. The first section is Class work. This is where we keep all of the work we do in class. The second tab is Homework. This is where we keep all of our homework that we did. The next tab is Assessment. This is where we keep our reflections for the investigation we did. The fourth tab is Reference. This is where we keep some of our reference sheets. The last tab is Vocabulary. This is where we keep our vocabulary notebooks.

My favorite investigation would have to be Shapes and Designs. Shapes and Designs teaches us about the different shapes and designs. It also teaches us about the properties of each shape and how to find the area and perimeter of each different kind of shape. We also learned about different ways to find how much the angle of a triangle is. We also learned how to find the different angles of lines that cross over one another.

I like Shapes and Designs the most because I liked learning about the different shapes and polygons. I also liked working on the geometry project were we had to take pictures of different shapes and then write about them and record our voices on. I really liked learning how to find the area of triangles and how to find the areas of trapezoids. I loved learning in the connected math program this year. I hope to learn in this program again next year.
